When The Future Was 2000AD

Most of my public online interaction is done on Twitter these days, and 2000AD's Tweet Droid has just re-posted the submissions guidelines document I wrote back when I was Tharg's Representative On Earth a decade ago.

I have it on good authority that Future Shocks should be 4 pages nowadays, not 5. Not being an artist, I don't have anything worthwhile to add to those art guidelines, but I would say this to aspiring 2000AD script-writers:

Take the "twist ending" of your Future Shock and put it at the bottom of page one. Then explore the ramifications. Instead of the punchline, make the twist your premise. Trust me, your story will be 1000% more interesting, and more personal. Find your own voice.

It also occurs to me that I sent a "mission statement" to all the established 2000AD writers and artists as soon as I was appointed Editor in the year 2000, right when Rebellion bought the comic, and it hasn't been easily accessible online since.

Somebody quoted me the "shot glass of rocket fuel" line at Thought Bubble last month, and it's being discussed on Twitter right now, so I thought it might be worth publishing that mission statement in its raw, unedited form. I'm not the same man I was back then (I would hope I'm slightly more self-aware and diplomatic these days) but, for what it's worth, it was very much written from the heart.

Here's how I felt about 2000AD in July 2000:

THE PROBLEM

“2000 AD just isn’t as good as it used to be.” That seems to be the consensus opinion of the 25,000 readers who have stuck with us over the last 23 years… not to mention the 100,000 who have abandoned the comic during that time. Sure, nostalgia plays a part, but that’s not the whole story. On the whole, I think 2000 AD is better right now than it has been for several years – but at the same time, I can read progs from 20 years ago that still pack more of a punch than some of the stuff we’re publishing now. So what’s gone wrong?

2000 AD was created with a powerful sense of energy and vision – you can still feel it in those early progs. But over the years, that original vision has become diluted. For quite a while now, 2000 AD seems to have been running on autopilot, and somebody needs to stand up and question whether it’s actually heading in the right direction.

I believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But if it is broke, we’d better figure out what’s wrong, and fix it - sharpish! That’s what this document is all about. I believe we can make 2000 AD a lot more fun and exciting than it is at the moment.

What follows is basically my vision for the future of 2000 AD, and the kind of stories I think we should be publishing. It would be naïve of me simply to try and set the clock back to 1977 – the world, the market and the readers have obviously changed radically since then – but a lot of the core values of those early days are sorely missing now. 2000 AD used to appeal to readers young and old alike – and it should do again. I really believe that if we can put some of that energy, that imagination and that attitude back into the great work we’re already doing, we can once more make 2000 AD a creative force to be reckoned with.

THE HIT

2000 AD readers talk about getting their weekly ‘hit’ or ‘fix’ of Thrill-power, and they’re only half joking. The comic should be a drug; a jolt of raw, unrefined energy and imagination. We aren’t there just to raise a faint ironic smile on the readers’ lips; we should blast them into a whole new reality! 2000 AD should be fast, dense, bizarre, twisted, funny, insane, rebellious, dark, ironic, imaginative and exciting! We should blow the readers’ minds wide open, and give them something they can’t get anywhere else!

What we should not be is bland, derivative and familiar. 2000 AD should be the comic other people copy, not the other way round.

We may all have different ideas of what 2000 AD is all about, or what it should be. I think it’s the editor’s job to provide a vision for the comic, a common goal for us all to aim for. So let’s get down to the basics, and build it up from there.

WHAT IS 2000 AD?

2000 AD IS A SCI-FI ACTION COMIC. The three pillars of its foundation are sci-fi, action (ie. violence!) and humour. Any story that doesn’t include all three is liable to run into trouble… unless it’s very, very good! Almost all the stories in 2000 AD include some element of humour, but out-and-out comedy strips that don’t put an emphasis on physical action and jeopardy tend to get crucified by the readers.

I want to make the readers happy… because I’m one of them. I’m a 2000 AD fan. I want to publish the kind of stories I like. The kind of stories that blew the back of my head off 20 years ago, and have kept me hooked ever since. Let’s give 2000 AD its balls back.

What follows is a general call-to-arms for every 2000 AD creator. Much of it is undoubtedly grandmother/eggs stuff, but it never hurts to re-state the obvious…

DENSITY

One of the reasons ex-2000 AD writers have been so successful in the American comics market is that 2000 AD (and the whole British boys’ adventure market of old) teaches writers how to condense. When you can tell a complete action story with a beginning, middle and end (and a point!) in five pages, you’ve cracked the art of comics writing. So let’s keep it dense, tight, snapping along at a cracking pace. Never use two panels (or pages, or episodes!) where one will do. In comics, less really is more. Condensing the action down into the least possible number of panels actually increases the drama; it’s like a form of distillation. Boil that barrel of beer down into a shot-glass of rocket fuel!

Atmosphere is all well and good, but when it takes six panels for somebody to find their car keys, the readers just aren’t getting their money’s worth.

CONCEPT

The best 2000 AD series are based around a single character with a strong defining motivation, simple enough to be summed up in a single sentence. For example, “He's Dirty Harry in New York of the future; judge, jury and executioner!” or “He's a genetically engineered soldier who goes AWOL to search for the traitor who killed his fellow GIs;” or “She’s an ordinary girl living in a futuristic slum who dreams of just getting out.”

Plot and setting are important, but still very much secondary to the core character concept: Who is the hero, and what does he/she want?

EYE CANDY

There are too many ‘talking heads’ stories in 2000 AD. There’s nothing wrong with good dialogue and character interaction, but conversation itself must never be the be-all and end-all of the story. Stories must unfold though visual action, not verbal exposition. The rule of thumb is; no more than three balloons/captions per panel, and no more than 25 words per balloon/caption.

If a casual browser leafs through the pages of 2000 AD and just sees a succession of talking heads, he’ll probably put it straight back on the shelf. If he sees big, eye-grabbing visuals, weird locations, cool-looking hardware and exciting action, he might just stop and read it long enough to decide whether he wants to buy it.

This applies to characters as much as situations. 2000 AD used to be full of bizarre-looking aliens, cyborgs, robots, freaks and mutants – and they were the heroes! Nowadays, most of our characters look like they just stepped out of a mainstream Hollywood movie. Let’s remember to create characters with a bold and unique visual style.

Comics is a visual medium, and we’ve only got five or six pages to grab the reader and give him that hit. Writers need to give the artists plenty of incredible, dynamic images to draw which will fire their imaginations. Okay, so we can’t expect a big, in-yer-face ‘money shot’ (so to speak) on every page… but let’s aim for one on every other page, where possible – especially for the cliffhangers. Speaking of which…

GRAB ‘EM BY THE BALLS!

2000 AD is an action comic, remember. It’s in danger of becoming too ‘sophisticated’ for its own good. Sure, a touch of knowing irony is one of the key ingredients for a successful 2000 AD story - but at the same time, we should never be too ‘sophisticated’ to go for the big, cheesy, grab-‘em-by-the-balls cliffhanger. There used to be an energy and rawness to the action which is missing nowadays. It’s all part of the ‘hit’ the readers crave – they want thrills, dammit!

End every episode on a high note, and leave the readers gagging to find out what happens next. It’s the only way to maintain a weekly readership. If they don’t care, why should they pick up the next issue?

GET WEIRD!

Another of the dangers of becoming too ‘sophisticated’ or, dare I say it, ‘mature’ (shudder) is that it can stifle the imagination. If, when you’re writing a story, there’s a little voice inside your head saying, “Yeah, but that would probably never happen in real life,” take it out and shoot it! We need to take the readers to the weirdest, most whacked-out fringes of our fevered imaginations. That’s what they’re paying us for!

We should give the readers something they can’t get anywhere else – be it movies, TV, video games, whatever. When 2000 AD looks bland and conventional compared to the average computer game, we’re in trouble. First and foremost, let’s BE ORIGINAL!

ENOUGH, ALREADY…

So there you go, that’s what I’d like us all to aim for. Shouldn’t be a problem – most of the creators I’ve spoken to have echoed similar sentiments. The fact is, everybody loves 2000 AD – they just don’t all love what it has turned into. I think the comic has been steadily improving over the last few years, so we’re heading in the right direction. Now that 2000 AD has a new look, a new editor and a new owner, let’s have some fun with it!

RAT CATCHER Review Round-Up

Meanwhile, my Vertigo Crime original graphic novel Rat Catcher was released this week, illustrated by the amazing Víctor Ibáñez. Check out his art blog and tell me this guy isn't the next Adam Hughes.

Reviews for Rat Catcher have been overwhelmingly positive. Best-selling crime novelist Ian Rankin says, "Rat Catcher is hot stuff. Moral ambiguities abound, the action is fierce, and the artwork is deadly."

Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons describes it as "compelling graphic storytelling, full of twists, turns and vivid characters."

The Comics Journal says "the setting is rough, the story is hard and fast, and the mystery is engaging," and that Rat Catcher is "potentially the strongest offering from the Vertigo Crime series thus far."

iFanboy echo that sentiment, describing it as "tons of fun" and saying it "might be the best one yet."

Rat Catcher also gets the thumbs-up from L.A. Times Hero Complex, Comic Book Resources and Largehearted Boy, who describe it as a "deliciously pulpy game of cat and mouse."

Yesterday a ton of THE LOSERS news and interviews hit the 'net, as Warner Bros lifted their embargo on set visits made during the filming in September 2009. They've also released six awesome new character posters.

The articles and interviews at Comic Book Resources, Cinematical, HitFix, SuperHeroHype, IGN, MovieWeb, SciFiWire are pretty much identical...

... but Collider wins extra points for including the original audio recordings alongside the interview transcripts:

Chris Evans As CAPTAIN AMERICA

Actor Chris Evans, who plays Jensen in THE LOSERS, has accepted the role of CAPTAIN AMERICA for Marvel Studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Personally I'm delighted. Chris was far and away the best thing about the otherwise mediocre FANTASTIC FOUR movies, but more importantly he's been amazing in more serious but less well-known roles in films like PUSH, STREET KINGS and especially Danny Boyle's SUNSHINE. If you've only seen him play cocky, wisecracking characters like Johnny Storm or Jensen, you need to understand that this guy can act. I have no doubt that he'll do a fine job bringing to life the stoic, dignified heroism of 1940s-era Steve Rogers.

Chris has been on the verge of stardom for a while, and I hope this is the role that finally pushes him over the top. Jock and I were lucky enough to hang out with him on the set of THE LOSERS, and a nicer guy you couldn't hope to meet. He's funny, charismatic and charming, and went out of his way to make us feel at ease. Frankly he deserves to be a household name. I'm guessing soon he will be.

THE LOSERS News Roundup

THE LOSERS movie adaptation is scheduled for release in the USA on April 23rd, and in the UK on May 28th.

Jock and I will be signing copies and giving away free posters at the Bristol and Barcelona comic cons and the London MCM Expo in May.

Warner Bros have released this new ad poster for the movie, which has already been spotted in the wild in LA. You can see an earlier one-sheet poster here.

I've just done a short interview about the movie with The Times Online, and another with USC's Daily Trojan.

THE LOSERS has had its second successful test screening and is rapidly approaching picture lock as final edit and special effects are completed. Jock has drawn new artwork for incorporation into the film, and the main title sequence (designed by Prologue of SE7EN and IRON MAN fame) features his original art from the comic -- so no-one will be left in any doubt about the source material!

Meanwhile, Chris Evans, who plays Jensen, has reportedly been offered the part of CAPTAIN AMERICA by Marvel Studios. No word yet on whether he's accepted their reported 9-picture (!) deal. (UPDATE: He said yes!)

I hope nobody's gonna get in trouble for breaching an NDA, but here are some first-hand reactions to THE LOSERS test screening at The Bridge in LA last week.

Linal says, "I saw LOSERS at test screening. Loads of fun, although still needs some tweaks. Great ensemble, Zoe as hot as a spitfire. Definitely can go up against the big boys. Jason Patric steals the show as villain Max. Hilarious and scary at same time. Plus very sexy."

FooFarmer says, "Was at the Bridge last week as well for that preview screening. LOSERS had a lot of laughs. Audience reaction was pretty vocal in favor. Some realistic action stuff, unlike that cheesey A-TEAM trailer . I agree that Jason Patric was a trip. In fact I think the movie could benefit with more of him to counterpoint Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character who is a bit laid back. The studio must know something to go head-to-head with the other biggies."

The trailer's flashed across the internet like wildfire, and the response from sites like EMPIRE and AIN'T IT COOL NEWS has been overwhelmingly positive. "This looks way better than THE A-TEAM" seems to be a common refrain on the message boards. Bodes well!

Latest news on THE LOSERS is that Spanish actor Oscar Jaenada has just landed the role of Cougar. This means that all six of the primary cast are now signed:

JENSEN: Chris Evans

Jason Patric has reportedly been linked to the role of neo-con arch-villain Max, though I'm not sure if he's officially signed. We've also heard of a possible great choice for Max's merc sidekick Wade, though we're waiting for an official announcement before blabbing.

IGN on THUNDERBOLTS #128

IGN have just given THUNDERBOLTS #128 a rating of 9/10 in their review. Here's an excerpt:

Thunderbolts #128 is a damn good comic. It's packed with smart, biting lines of dialogue, interesting developments, a small but satisfying dosage of Diggle's brand of action, and a central conflict that's as compelling as any I've read in a long time. I always knew Diggle was capable of writing pulse-pounding action. This issue proves he's also capable of extremely intelligent character work and richly layered plot progression. With the dynamic but uneven Robert De La Torre showing significant signs of improvement with each issue, Thunderbolts promises to remain a must read for a long, long time.

Comics Bulletin have run the first review of THUNDERBOLTS #128, on sale today in the US. From the review:

In this issue we find the Black Widow and Ant-Man engaged in covert ops aboard Air Force One. It would seem that writer Andy Diggle is setting up these Thunderbolts as the opposite of Nick Fury's Secret Warriors. Osborn would now have a mirror team for Nick Fury as well as Captain America, the Dark Avengers vs the New Avengers...

The creative team has done a great job in this issue. Writer Andy Diggle uses dialogue quite well, with the entire cast sounding unique and true to their character. The art is excellent, both the consistent and sharp pencils and the mood setting colors. Each character is instantly recognizable and no two people look alike, and the scale used with certain size-changing members of the Thunderbolts is handled accurately.

THUNDERBOLTS Are Go!

My first issue of THUNDERBOLTS hits stores in the U.S. tomorrow, and there are already a couple of positive advance reviews up on Newsarama and Comic Book Resources.

It's actually kind of a weird way to start my first ever ongoing Marvel series. While it's set after the events of SECRET INVASION # 8, it goes on sale beforehand; so I've had to deal with the ramifications of SI's twist ending without actually spoiling it.

The ending of SECRET INVASION will have massive repercussions for the Marvel Universe in general and THUNDERBOLTS in particular, and you'll see those changes played out in my third issue (on sale in January).

So THUNDERBOLTS # 126 moves all the pieces into position, 127 checkmates them, and 128 throws the chess board out of the window and sets fire to the building.

It's going to be a fun ride.

I've been happily friending fans on MySpace and ComicSpace for a while now, but I've always tried to keep Facebook reserved for friends, colleagues and people I actually know (ar at least, know of).

I Get My Kicks On Earth 616

So the big announcement for me at SDCC was that I'm taking over as regular writer on Marvel's THUNDERBOLTS. Chris Gage is doing the four-issue SECRET INVASION tie-in, and then it's my baby -- ably supported by Roberto De La Torre (IRON MAN: DIRECTOR OF SHIELD) on art.

It's all come together so fast, my head's still spinning. I bumped into Pasqual Ferry at the Barcelona con a few months back, and we agreed that working together on a NICK FURY book would pretty much be our dream job. Turns out Marvel already had plans for Nick Fury and Pasqual, but they came right back at me with, "How'd you like to write THUNDERBOLTS?"

Yu-huh.

My only previous Marvel work was a PUNISHER one-shot a few years ago, and I have to say this is an interesting time to be getting my foot in the door. I'm picking up THUNDERBOLTS exactly where SECRET INVASION ends -- and it's great fun being a part of what they have planned next for the ol' 616.

It's also great fun writing a bunch of homicidal psychopaths like Bullseye, Venom and Norman Osborn.

Fun. Damn, it's been a while. I've just finished writing the first draft of my first issue, and I can honestly say I haven't had this much fun writing a comic in years. In fact, I can barely remember when writing a comic didn't feel like homework. So yeah, colour me happy.

My run begins with Norman Osborn moving his chess pieces into place in the immediate aftermath of the Skrull invasion -- and then everything flips on its head. The status quo gets thrown out the window. We simultaneously open both a can of worms and a can of whup-ass, and that's a two-can guarantee.

Below are some teaser interviews I've done with the main comic sites. I'm sworn to secrecy on where it's all going, but trust me, once you see how SECRET INVASION ends, you'll wish you were already picking up THUNDERBOLTS. 'Nuff said!

Okay, looks like I'm good to go. Those saintly folks at DC Comics have already sorted out my hotel room and registration, so all I need to do now is... well, travel 5,000 miles!

It's a shame Colin Wilson couldn't join Dave Gibbons for the BIONIC COMMANDO signing; it would have been a real old-school ROGUE TROOPER reunion!

Now I just have to finish off three different scripts in the next 24 hours, while simultaneously celebrating my eight-year wedding anniversary. (Forward planning was never my forte).

I've just ordered a bottom-end Asus EEE PC off Amazon for "Guaranteed Next Day Delivery by 1pm" (we'll see!) so I can get some writing done on the journey. Something tells me I'm gonna need it...

It's The Traditional Pre-SDCC Panic Attack!

Shameful to admit I haven't blogged for three months, but I haven't been allowed to announce any of my new projects and, hell, it's not like you wanted to know what I had for breakfast, right... ?

Fortunately, word is now out at Newsarama about the BIONIC COMMANDO web-comic I've written for Capcom, based on their forthcoming videogame remake / sequel / requel. It's illustrated by the mighty, mighty Colin Wilson -- one of my boyhood artistic heroes -- and if like me you grew up awed by his work on JUDGE DREDD and ROGUE TROOPER, you know there's no-one on the planet who draws plausible near-future military hardware like Colin.

We're running the webcomic at BionicCommando.com (updated every Wednesday) and the whole 32-page shebang will be bound up as a free giveaway comic for people who pre-order the game. What makes it even cooler is the fact that Dave Gibbons (you've heard of this WATCHMEN thing, right? Heard it might catch on) has done the cover for us, and he'll be signing free posters with me at the Capcom booth at SDCC from 5pm this Saturday.

That's right around the time my next big writing gig is being announced. Watch this space. This one's gonna be fun.

I'll then be wittering (and possibly Twittering) about my involvement with Bionic Commando at the big Capcom panel at 6pm, SDCC Room 2. I'll presumably also be signing at the DC booth at some point, though I haven't seen a schedule yet.

Meanwhile I'm running around like a tweaker in a hamster wheel, trying to get on top of my unannounced projects before I lose a week inside the giant crazy pinball machine that is San Diego Comic-Con. That's if they'll even let me in. I'm on DC's guest list, but I never registered with the con folks and now I'm having a last-minute panic attack that I won't be eligible for entry...

Anyway, I promise I'll update this blog more often, and daily via this newfangled Twitter feed. Stay tuned.

My Week In Media

Thanks to that gutter-press layabout Craig McGill, I've just been tagged with this My Week In Media meme that's apparently doing the rounds.

(And don't you just hate people who use words like "meme" and "trope"? It's like the phrase "tour de force" - nobody says that shit in real life except on the back of a book blurb. Tossers!).

Anyway, since I'm never too busy with work to waste a morning on pointless displacement activity, I'm all over it like atopic dermatitis.

DVDs

Been working my way through the stack I got for Christmas, including:

THE BOURNE TRILOGY: I've always said action movies don't have to treat the audience like fucking idiots, and the success of the Bourne movies proves it. Rock solid entertainment. I wish they'd kept in more of ULTIMATUM's missing scenes showing the backstabbing backroom politics at Langley, though.

28 WEEKS LATER: Even better than the original. In most horror movies, things go wrong because the characters act like idiots. In this movie, everything goes wrong because the characters try to do the decent, human thing. That is some bleak shit. You really, really want these people to live. Doyle is a stand-up guy.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END: An incoherent mess. Just fucking awful. Seriously, what were they even thinking? They could have cured cancer with the amount of money this must have cost, but it didn't occur to them to come up with an actual story first?

BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT: A smart new cut in a crystal-clear print, correcting (most of) the myriad annoying little continuity glitches which always made me suspect that Ridley Scott cared far more about "creating a world" (i.e "making pretty pictures") than actually telling a story. Seriously, he designs every magazine on sale in the street vendors' stalls, but he can't find a matching wig for Joanna Cassidy's stunt double or keep track of how many replicants are supposed to be in his story? Priorities, dude. Still, a bloody great film all round, now even better.

DANGEROUS DAYS: MAKING BLADE RUNNER: Simply one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. It weighs in at a staggering three and a half hours, yet every moment is pure gold dust for a BLADE RUNNER nerd like me. You get the very clear impression that Harrison Ford would have dearly loved to punch Ridley Scott's lights out. Funniest moment: Roy Batty's death scene. Rutger Hauer releases the white dove... which is so rain-soaked it's too heavy to fly, so it just sort of waddles off sadly. Poetry.

BOOKS

THE RELIGION by Tim Willocks: a ballsy, bloody, rollicking historical adventure novel about a worldly mercenary hired to snatch a bastard child from the jaws of the invading Turks during the Siege of Malta in 1565. Brutal, philosophical and compelling.

THE FBI: A COMPREHENSIVE REFERENCE GUIDE: Dipping into this one for reference for an OGN I'm writing.

COMICS

BUFFY SEASON EIGHT # 10: Picked it up yesterday from First Age Comics in Lancaster; haven't read it yet.

TV

30 ROCK skipped a week, so it's pretty much just been BBC News, Al Jazeera English and kid's stuff for me. Although I did introduce my four-year old daughter to the joys of BEN 10. Gotta love that Jack-Kirby-by-way-of-Mike-Mignola-by-way-of-Dave-Johnson production design.

CINEMA

I wish! Having two pre-school kids makes it hard to get out of an evening, although I'd probably give I AM LEGEND a go if there's nothing else on. Very much looking forward to NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN though, kids be damned.

ONLINE

Usual morning trawl through my Safari toolbar faves: BBC News, Reuters, AICN, Slashfilm, Engadget, Variety, plus RSS feeds from Alex Epstein, Stephen Gallagher, John August and John Rogers, and the occasional dip into the Straight To Hell HELLBLAZER message board and the V forum to see what's going on in the comics world, although I do miss their old giant comics thread.

No wonder I never seem to get any work done.

Right, I'm now going to tag Antony Johnston, Alex Epstein, Brian K. Vaughan and Jason Aaron with this thing. Let's see if they bite.

Dublin Bound!

THE LOSERS Screenwriter Pens SPIDER-MAN 4

Jamie Vanderbilt - who wrote ZODIAC for David Fincher, as well as reworking Peter Berg's screenplay adaptation of THE LOSERS - has been hired to write SPIDER-MAN 4. Jamie is Good People, and I can't wait to see what he does with it.

THE LOSERS movie, meanwhile, has ground to a halt 'til everyone finds out whether the Writers' Guild is actually going to strike. If it does, the Teamsters are going out in sympathy and there's some chance the Actor's Guild might follow suit. No-one in Hollywood's making any plans past next June - which means if you haven't already got a cast and director locked down, it's development hell time.

And speaking of directors, Tim "FANTASTIC FOUR" Story is now off THE LOSERS. Having recently seen THE KINGDOM, I'm more convinced than ever that Peter Berg would have been the perfect man for the job, but his schedule is looking awfully busy these days...

Looks like I now have not one but two comics-to-movies in development at Warner Bros. If only they were creator-owned...

From Variety:

Guy Ritchie plans to direct a film version of his Virgin Comics series "The Gamekeeper" at Warner Bros., with Joel Silver set to produce.

Deal marks the first original Virgin Comics property to move into development as a feature.

Project revolves around the reclusive caretaker of a Scottish estate with infinite knowledge of the behaviors of all animal species. When the alleged killer of his son surfaces, the caretaker finds that Europe's urban jungle is not so unlike that of the natural landscape to which he's accustomed.

Concept was created by Ritchie, but Andy Diggle handles the writing duties.

"After reading Guy's comics, we knew instantly that the action-packed story and complex characters would resonate with film audiences," said Warner Bros. production prexy Jeff Robinov.

Berg and Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster are producing. Also producing is Sarah Aubrey, Berg's partner at Film 44, and John Cameron, who brought the project to Film 44.

Film will center around a small band of elite and highly trained commandos who are set up to to be killed by their own government. They set out to avenge the wrong, as well as avenge other injustices.

"The Losers" was published by DC Comics imprint Vertigo in the 1970s. Strip was revived several years.

Story's feature adaptation will be set in contemporary times, with the special ops team carrying out missions around the world before the members are left for dead. Flying under the radar, they return and move around the U.S.

"I'm a big fan of the edge of war movies like 'Black Hawk Down' or 'Band of Brothers,' and this has some of that. I was looking for a vehicle that would have that edge, but I didn't want to lose my personality, which is a bit tongue-and-cheek, where the characters have a little fun with each other," Story told Daily Variety.

"I haven't made a movie in the real world since 'Barbershop,' because I've been locked into the superhero fantasy world," he says.

Berg originally penned the script with an eye to direct, but is instead helming "Tonight, He Comes."

Story's "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" opens June 15. Second installment in the Fox franchise comes two years after Story's 2005 "Fantastic Four."

Story is producing the upcoming film "First Sunday," starring Ice Cube, for Screen Gems.

And now I can reveal that the "offer I couldn't refuse" is a project I'm developing for Virgin Comics with LOCK STOCK / SNATCH writer-director Guy Ritchie.

THE GAMEKEEPER is a Director's Cut mini-series about a killer who's more in touch with the natural world than he is with his own humanity. Guy came up with the original character and premise, and I'm developing it into a 10-issue series to be illustrated by DEVI's Mukesh Singh.

I'll be joining Bryan Talbot and a host of small press creators at the first ever Lancaster Comic Con, which is being held on October 28th in the spectacular Ashton Memorial at the heart of Lancaster's Williamson Park.

It promises to be a small but perfectly formed event, with an emphasis on indie/small press comics. There'll be signings, sketches, competitions and a comic art exhibition. Bring the kids!

Can't believe it's been almost two months since I last blogged! Sorry, everyone. The problem with having a work-related blog is that 90% of the time I'm not actually allowed to talk about what I'm working on - the publishers always want me to keep schtum until they've made an official announcement.

Believe it or not, I've currently got four new projects on the go that I'm waiting to announce. Being a notorious blabbermouth, it almost killed me keeping BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL to myself for almost two years - but finally it's been solicited for sale on December 13th, with a scorching cover by Whilce Portacio and Richard Friend.

And to those of you who are worried that Whilce won't be able to draw both this and WETWORKS, fret ye not - Whilce finished pencilling WETWORKS aaaages ago.

All in all it's been an interesting week. Coming to the end of my exclusive contract with DC Comics, I started putting out feelers to other publishers - and immediately got what can only be described as an Offer I Can't Refuse. Combine that with a pay rise for my next Vertigo project, and I’m suddenly learning that I have a lot more bargaining power outside of an exclusive contract than in one.

It’s nice to be in demand. Now I just need to figure out how to fit all the work in...

Tom Frame passed away yesterday, taken by cancer. He was the finest letterer in British comics, his work synonymous with JUDGE DREDD for almost 30 years.

More importantly he was a hell of a nice bloke, much loved, and he will be missed.

Final Draft for Comics

Internet rumor has it that you once made an awesome Final Draft template for comic book scripts. And, it was once available for download. However, it is now nowhere to be found. Does it still exist? Would you be willing to share it again? I certainly hope so!
For once, Internet rumour actually has it right. It was Antony Johnston who first switched me on to the joys of Final Draft, and gave me a copy of his own comic-book template to go along with it.

Since then I've developed my own version of the template, which more closely resembles traditional screenplay format - right down to the pig-ugly Courier font. You can download it for Final Draft 6 here. Look for the title page under Document -> Title Page.

My template is pretty much pared-down to the bone, so I've also provided my original script for the first issue of SILENT DRAGON in FD format, so you can see how it looked beofre Leinil Yu wrought his artistic magic on it. And hey - the graphic novel's out next week! Coincidence... ?

Finally it’s been announced! Yep, I’ve written the six-issue launch arc of the new BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL title, with Whilce Portacio on art.

I can’t believe I’ve been keeping this story secret for almost two years now - ever since Bob Schreck offered me DETECTIVE COMICS at the SDCC back in 2004. How things have changed since then. What’s weird is that I’m now apparently considered one of DC’s “A-list” creators, which is a scary place to be. That’s a big spotlight...

Apologies for not blogging much lately - I'm up to my neck in my Big Shiny New DCU Project That Isn't Batman, which I'm having a lot of fun with. Knowing Jock's going to be drawing it, and that I'll have time to re-write every issue before he even starts drawing the first one, is making it a really enjoyable experience.

Other than that, there's not much to report other than some short interviews I've done over the past couple of months but forgot to plug. Okay, so I know this is a shameless display of own-trumpet-blowing on my part, but what the hell -- I'm so chuffed, I can't not post it...

In the latest Marvel Spotlight, writer/director/all-round genius Joss Whedon lists his favourite comic books, including THE LOSERS:

Has it really been a month since I last blogged? Yikes. I’ve been spending a lot less time online just lately, and being that much more productive for it. My New Year’s resolution this year was to simplify my life, get organised, streamline my workload, concentrate on finishing one project at a time... and waste less time on the Internerd.

I’m currently in that weird quiet space between finishing one bunch of projects - THE LOSERS, SILENT DRAGON and the rest - and announcing the next one. Ploughing through my Big Shiny New DCU Project That I’m Not Allowed To Talk About Yet while putting together a couple of pitches for whatever I’ll be doing after that.

One’s a creator-owned thriller miniseries/OGN, and the other’s a revamp of a DCU origin story - a character I’d never had any great desire to write, until I was suddenly seized with inspiration. The great thing about origin stories is that you can give a well-established corporate trademark character an arc. Starting out, he can still grow and change. He isn’t set in stone... yet.

It looks like I might also be working on a next-gen console game for a major Japanese company, plus I’m hoping to write a spec movie screenplay in my Copious Spare Time. I wasn’t as productive as I should have been last year, though, so right now I just need to concentrate on getting some DC pages written. I got hit with a nasty tax bill just after Christmas - right around the time my washing machine and printer simultaneously blew up and had to be replaced. Ouch. Looks like I’ll be living on my overdraft for a while...

I was just perusing the new issue of Empire magazine - the one with King Kong on the cover - and I nearly fell off my chair when I read this in the "Dear Santa" piece.

I'm thinking of writing something featuring the FBI, and I could use some pointers to set me heading in the right direction research-wise. Can any of you recommend some good non-fiction books on the FBI, and/or answer some dumb questions for me... ?

For example, if a federal witness was murdered at a WITSEC safe-house along with his US Marshal bodyguards, who would investigate the murder - the Marshals Service or the FBI? Would a US Marshal be assigned to assist/liaise with the FBI investigation? How does the FBI chain of command work at a national and local level? Does God exist? Who invented liquid soap, and why... ?
